The following is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but stay with me on this one, because it is really important.
I’m going to come right out and say this…
Lots of practice owners have a huge ego problem.
And this ego problem is the reason:
- They’re stuck working IN their practice,
- They’re overwhelmed and frustrated
- They struggle to grow and scale their accountancy practice
Here’s why…
If practice owners truly want to scale their practice and minimise the reliance on themselves, then they have to automate and delegate as much as possible.
Yet most practice owners have an issue when it comes to letting things go.
“I can’t let my team do that”
“I’m the face of this practice, the clients want to speak to me only”
“Nobody can do it like I do, they’re not up to my level”
If you’re guilty of thinking or saying something like that, then you’re playing a great game of ‘I’ve got a big ego’.
You’ve created some arbitrary benchmark that nobody can ever come close to hitting all because you’ve put yourself on a pedestal.
I get it.
It feels great to be the centre of the universe.
Everything has to go through you.
You feel important.
But at what expense?
The cost here is your freedom.
If being stuck working in your practice day after day, slogging away with not enough to show for it at the end is worth you ‘feeling important’ then fine, continue as you are.
But if you’re tired of being stuck, overwhelmed, frustrated, unable to grow and scale then please just let go of your ego.
Can you hand over all your clients to your team overnight? No. This is a mountain to climb but please know others have climbed it before you.
Will there be a few mistakes from your team that you wouldn’t have made? Probably. But nothing a bit of training and feedback won’t correct.
Is it going to be an easy ride? Definitely not. It’s going to feel uncomfortable and you will want to quit at times, but you have to keep pushing through because the end result is so worth it.
Put your ego to one side and start letting things go.
Because when you do, you find it much easier to grow and scale your practice.
